The film was inspired by the life of Queen Ashanti Abla Pokou, who lived in the 18th century, and legends that surround her. In the kingdom of Kumasi, in present-day Ghana, Princess Abla Pokou grew up under the protection of the king's priestesses, who introduced her to the protection of the kingdom and the struggle against mystical forces. Having grown up, she sits on the council of elders where she is the youngest, which does not prevent her from becoming one of the most influential advisers of King Opokou Warê.

But Kongouê Bian, a former warrior practising witchcraft, foments a coup and kills the legitimate heir to the throne. A pacifist, Abla Pokou prefers to go into exile to avoid a massacre: she then founds the Baoulé people that she guides to the present Ivory Coast.
