The 3ds Max logo with its distinct shapes of two interwoven snakes is quite popular within the 3D industry. It is a shape I have fallen in love with since the days of discreet 3ds Max 5. This is an image I made for a competition in 2011 to "design centric’ scene using the 3ds Max logo"
I spent some time thinking and researching the internet for inspiration I drew ideas from these images. I particularly liked the characteristic solar panels on the left image and the ambiance around the image on the right.
I took a shortcut that paid off to sketching the design. I imported the logo (in CAD format) to 3ds Max, applied the ‘extrude modifier’. I worked with the premise of 12 floors with 6meter per floor. That gave me a sense of size and how much extrusion depth I needed. I placed a camera in the scene and printed the shaded view similar to the view I wanted. Using this as a reference, I began sketching on this view and this was a lot easier and quicker too.
The passes were combined in Photoshop. I added some gradient and a lively background to achieve some dramatic effects. I did not carry out a test render of the entire scene before proceeding to rendering the final image. This is evident from some of the bits and pieces in the image that needs fixing.
